Interiors Aren’t Weird Enough | The Power of Intentional Interiors

We Can't Be the Only Ones Noticing Contemporary Interiors Are Starting to Look (and Feel) the Same

Scroll through Instagram, Pinterest, or TikTok for not even five minutes and you’ll notice that the majority of homes in your feed look identical. It’s as if everyone ordered the same living room from the same link in the same someone’s bio.

We’re in the thick of a design era where intentional interiors have become a rarity, personality-infused spaces seem to have gone missing, and homes are starting to feel more like staged social media posts rather than lived-in spaces.

The reality is, we live in an influencer-driven, convenience-obsessed design culture. And the result? Homes just aren’t weird enough.

The Copy-and-Paste Effect of Influencer Culture

Influencers have created a normalcy in interior design where design is less about self-expression and more about duplication. They're hustling for those link clicks, its their income so on one hand we respect the hustle, but on the other they make us want to scream.

An influencer’s new living room will go viral and suddenly everyone wants their living room to look exactly like that. What was once a unique home devolves into a copy of what is trending and instead of telling the homeowner’s unique and magical story, the home ends up telling someone else’s.

Now to be clear, if you’re using links to purchase items that because of the post you now know are exceptionally soft, a color you’ve been searching for, or have proven to last through time then we’re all for shopping each other's link.

Referral shopping is different from trend shopping.

What we’re afraid of is blind following. It seems like too many have lost the “why” behind their design choices. Interiors today seem to lack intention. And it's very likely the result of, “Where did you get that? Send me the link” because shoppers want to be like someone else more than they want to be themselves.

Homes Are Losing Charm and Character

Character rarely ever comes from furniture you assemble yourself and we promise charm doesn’t come from whatever’s viral at the moment.

Character comes from layering old and new.

Charm comes from choosing pieces that feel like you and excite you.

While there’s nothing wrong with wanting pieces delivered quickly or working to keep your decor feeling fresh, there’s absolutely something to be said about the value of intentional interiors built from waiting for and investing in the right pieces.

Our biggest wish is for readers to understand the power intentional interiors have. Interiors have the ability to shape an experience and improve your wellbeing. And they do so when filled with pieces of intention and self reflection.

Where Convenience Culture Makes It Worse

Convenience is wonderful for groceries, travel, and communication. But in interior design, convenience removes the journey of collecting. The discovery of ‘oh this is SO me’ pieces.

All the magic that makes a home uniquely yours suddenly disappears and although your space matches the picture, something still feels off.

Let’s Make Homes Weird Again

Homes should feel like the people who live in them. And people? We’re quirky. We’re layered. We’re inconsistent. Our homes should reflect that through intentional interiors.

Buy the funky lamp that makes you smile.

Hang the bizarre painting you got on vacation.

Mix Grandma’s vintage dresser with your modern bed.

Choose colors that make your heart jump.
